3 things: know-it-alls, defensive driving, and the 3 p.m. slump

Hey Reader,

You can’t control other people. That’s true at home, work, social gatherings, and even at sporting events. Your only leverage is in your own words.

Sierra and I have this conversation with our kids a lot: You don’t get to choose what someone else says or does. You only get to choose what you do next.

That’s what this week’s tips are about. Let’s jump in.

#1. From My Inbox: “How do I kindly respond to a micro-corrector who acts like a know-it-all?”

Take a breath before you answer. Give the correction one nod, then take the wheel back: "You may be right. Here's what matters." If they keep at it, say it plain: "I want to finish this thought first. Then I'm all ears."

One nod. Then back on the road. That's how to handle a person who corrects everything you say.

#2. A Communication Tip: Use Defensive Driving

Driving a conversation is a lot like driving a car. You can and should drive defensively.

You can’t control the other driver, but you can choose how much distance to put between you and what lane you’re driving in. Give them upfront choices. “If you bring up _____, then I’m going to walk away.” Then follow through.

You are in control of deciding how you will (and will not) be treated. Don't be afraid to stay in your lane and keep your distance.

#3. Something I’m Currently Loving: A Fix for the 3 p.m. Slump

I'll be honest with you. Around 3 p.m., I fade. Energy first, focus right behind it. And most days the evidence is sitting on my desk: Two empty coffee cups and a water bottle still full from breakfast.

So I keep LMNT packets in my desk drawer. Between calls, or before I record a podcast, I'll mix one into my water. I drink it because it tastes good. It's salt and electrolytes, and it beats a third cup of coffee. This link gets you a free sample pack.

Glad you're here Reader,

J

Hey Reader, I love checking my email. (I know how that sounds. I stand by it.) But hearing from you is my favorite part. This week Nathaniel sent me a note that said, "A lot of communication advice out there focuses on handling what's already broken. You seem to be interested in helping us with the moment tension first appears, before the conversation goes off the rails, so we can change what happens next." Nathaniel, you're right. The first few seconds of a difficult conversation determine...
