3 things: nosey people, setting aside your ego, and Sunday Reflections

Hey Reader,

This week inside the School of Communication, we practiced pausing for others. Most people think the pause is for them - a moment to collect thoughts, find the right words, or calm down. And yes, it does all of that.

But the real purpose of the pause is the person across from you. When you pause, you give them space to fully finish before you respond.

It's been powerful to watch how that small shift has shown up for our members this week.

Let’s get into this week’s 3 things.

#1. From My Inbox: “If you're asked a question by someone you don't like or trust, how do you politely not answer without seeming cold or rude? And what do you say instead?”

You don’t owe every question an answer. Here’s the simple toolkit I use.

Always lead with a pause. Then clearly state your boundary. “That’s not something I share.” Immediately pivot: “But I’d love to hear how your week’s going.” This clearly sets the boundary, but politely offers a bridge for them to continue the conversation.

#2. A Communication Tip: One Phrase That Can Save a Relationship

Sometimes in an argument you just get lost. Both of you are physically present, but neither one of you knows what to say. Break the silence by saying, “I can do better.” It’s not accepting fault or placing blame. It’s setting pride and ego aside and saying what is universally true, that you could have done better.

When you say it, you’re going to be amazed at how quickly it fills that hole back up and puts you both on the right path.

#3. Something I’m Currently Loving: Sunday Reflections

We started something new inside the School of Communication called Sunday Reflections. Each week, members look back at what they practiced and share one thing they noticed about how they show up for the people around them. Reading through those comments every week is one of my favorite things. We really are more alike than we think. And it keeps me honest about my own goals, too.

Thanks for being here,

J

Hey Reader, This week, I sat down with Shawn Johnson and Andrew East to talk about marriage. Shawn is an Olympic gold medalist and Andrew is a former NFL player. Not only are they a power couple, but they are some of the most kind and down to earth people I’ve ever met. Together, they’ve built businesses, raised kids, written a new book called The Courage to Commit, and spent the last 10 years learning how to build a marriage that actually lasts. What I appreciated most about this...

Hey Reader, May has a way of speeding everything up. The warmer weather and longer days have my kids drinking more of their favorite “salty water” (and me too!). As summer plans ramp up, it becomes easy to rush conversations. This week, let’s change that. #1. From My Inbox: “How do you respond to someone that is constantly bragging? I don't want to be mean spirited, but I get tired of hearing how wonderful they are.” Wanting to stop the monologue isn’t mean spirited and it can be done in a...

Hey Reader, In this episode I have the privilege of listening to more voicemails sent by you. I hear these questions for the first time on the podcast, so my responses are completely raw and real. In this episode, you’ll learn: How to respond when someone says “that’s just my personality” as an excuse to be rude What to say when someone gives you a backhanded compliment or passive aggressive jab Calm phrases that immediately shift power back to you in tense conversations How to know when a...
