3 things: mean comments, confident people, and flat whites

Hey Reader,

One more Australia story and then I'll move on. Deal? Coffee in hand as I type this, which will make sense when you get to #3. Let's get into it.

#1. From My Inbox: "I struggle to control my anger when I see people make mean comments intended to hurt others. What's the best way to stay calm and still defend someone?"

That heat you feel watching someone get torn down means you care. That's good. Now get control of it before you speak. One slow inhale through your nose. Shoulders drop on the exhale.

Then choose your next words:

"Was that meant to be helpful or hurtful?"
"That crossed the line."
"We don't talk to people like that here."

A steady voice defends better than a loud one.

#2. A Communication Tip: Confident People Speak Once

We learn early that the loudest voice runs the room. You saw it in today's inbox question. But think about who you listen to at work. It's the person talking at half that volume.

Confident people don't need to repeat themselves. Say your point one time. Say it slower than feels comfortable. People hear that.

#3. Something I'm Currently Loving: Flat Whites (my new Aussie friends know this one)

I've been back from Australia for a few days now, but one thing came home with me: flat whites. I've been making them at home. They taste close. Close enough to bring me back for a minute. New to flat whites? It's a coffee you'll find all over Australia. A little smaller than a latte, a little stronger, and smooth all the way through. If you find them on a menu near you, order one.

Glad you're here Reader,

J

Hey Reader, If you know someone who is in pain and the first words you say to them are, "Tell me if you need anything," or "Let me know if there's anything I can do"...that's the wrong thing to say. How you communicate when someone is hurting can mean the difference between growing closer in the relationship or losing it. In this week's episode, I'm teaching you how to show up when someone you love is hurting. You'll learn: The well-meant phrase that makes it worse Why the best comfort leans...

Hey Reader, We're heading home from Australia this week, and I'm grateful. We loved our time Down Under. Still, there's no place like home. Over the years, I’ve noticed most of the questions people ask me are about communicating with the people under their own roof: their spouses, siblings, children, and even their grown kids. So this week is about home. :) #1. From My Inbox “My adult children and I have radically different views about religion, politics and just the world in general. Do you...

Hey Reader, One of my favorite things is reading emails from listeners. This week I received one that grabbed my attention. She said, “I love your book and podcast, but your car videos are still my favorite.” The truth is, I like making car videos. There’s something special about sitting in the truck with just a microphone and a pink carseat in the back, talking directly to you. So, this week I’m back in the truck discussing a hot button topic: bad bosses. You can't always choose your boss....
